UMD Clean Energy
UMD Energy was established to not only create transparency on energy issues, but to also advocate for smarter energy choices at the University of Maryland and surrounding communities.Currently the University of Maryland, College Park acquires most of its energy from fossil fuel combustion. This generation type runs the gamut from relatively clean (natural gas) to horribly polluting (coal). Not only are these methods detrimental to human and environmental health, but there are debates over how ’secure’ the United State’s supply of them is. While coal is harvested almost exclusively inside the United States for domestic use, natural gas and oil products are supplied by a variety of international companies from countries all over the world.
We advocate a switch from fossil fuel energy sources to sustainable, non-polluting sources of energy. Because Maryland gets so little of its energy from these sources, the university should consider purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that will allow the University to purchase sustainable energy products from other states.
